Ladybugs Swarming South Could be Larger Than Normal Accumulation Leading to a 'Perfect Insect Storm' This Halloween

Ladybugs swarming South is not that big of a deal for some, but this year's swarm of black-spotted red-shelled bugs could be larger than the expected accumulation, leading experts to believe it is a "perfect insect storm" in time for this year's Halloween celebration.

According to NewsMax, the large number of Ladybugs swarming in Tennessee Valley and other areas of the South is due to the region's weather conditions and the insects' search for food supply.

Entomologist David Cook of the Davidson County Extension Service told WTVF News Channel 5 in Nashville, Tennessee that this year's swarm is quite larger than the ones we see in the past years, adding that it is far greater than the normal accumulation of ladybugs.

"We have perfect weather conditions, and a large food population," Cook said. "This is a perfect insect storm."

A UPI report quoted a Diane Stroud, who revealed that the number of ladybugs she found flying around her house was quite surprising this year.

"We were just sitting at home and noticed a few outside," Stroud said. "We went out to look and there were tons flying around. We were really shocked."

Asian Lady Beetles or simply ladybugs are swarming South in an attempt to find a much comfortable habitat that could provide them warmth and shelter during the cold winter months that are fast approaching, Cook said.

As for the troubles these swarms could bring people, Cook said that these insects omit a strange odor and have this affinity to light, which could be a bother to some people.

"It will get worse before it gets better," Cook said. "We will need a couple of good, hard freezes to get rid of them."

In the end, Cook maintained that people should not worry since the ladybugs are bound to vanish as the cold frosts become harder. He also maintained that we can expect a smaller swarm next year since the population of these insects tends to dip following a big accumulation. But for now they are here to stay for the Halloween.
