At the Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport , trick or treating took a bizarre turn as cocaine was found in three pumpkins, by the border patrol. This trick was played by a twenty six year old female traveler named Mercedes Jerez Farias, who was carrying the trio of drug filled Jack o Lanterns in her luggage. But her treats were discovered.
Each pumpkin was loaded down with found and a half pounds of cocaine in them. Of the one hundred and seventy seven drug arrests made at the Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, only ten of those have been cocaine related. It seems marijuana being smuggled in from Seattle is the mains drug problem they face. Though with all the green space Canadians have to work with its a wonder that more aren't growing their own.
Border service noticed when they handled the woman's pumpkins, that they felt a little to heavy, to not be filled with some sort of candy. The bagged cocaine was soon found when they ran the pumpkins through the x-ray, before the horse backed Mounties rode in to save the good name of Halloween. It is still unconfirmed where the pumpkin patch she was coming from was located. Her court papers said she lives on the south shore of Montreal in Delson, though it has not been confirmed if she is in fact a Canadian citizen. The bulk of drugs smuggled into Canada arrive via the United States and are not normally brought in by Canadian citizens.
While the street value of the drug can vary depending upon the cut, it is estimated that each pumpkin was worth around two hundred and seventy four thousand dollars to three hundred and forty thousand. If convicted Farias could be imprisoned for up to two years. Of course such would be based of the fact is she knowingly filled the pumpkins with said cocaine or if some sort of witchcraft might have been at work to play a trick on Ferez. As reported yesterday, many witches hold resentments against Halloween so this could be some sort of retaliation.
One thing is for sure .after this one incident, now drug filled pumpkins can be added to the list of Halloween urban legends for detractors of the ghoulish holiday can try to scare children with. This is however the first case of pumpkin carved as a drug mule, so when your neighborhoods start discarding their pumpkins , do not call the police.
