Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Vs. LG Nexus 5 Comparison Review: Specs, Features & More!

Although comparing the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with the LG Nexus 5 would be very unfair - given that they belong to very different flagship tiers - it is still worth noting that they are the newest high-end phones in the market as of late. People, who are very eager to make a purchase this coming holiday season, would most likely benefit from a comparison review of the latest LG Nexus 5 and how it scores when compared with the most advanced smartphone device in the market: the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Hence, without further ado here's a review of the best specs and features of the two android-running devices in a nutshell.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 over LG Nexus 5

The expensive price of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 seems pretty fair for a powerful device that packs in a lot of goodies. The first thing that makes the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 stand out from the LG Nexus 5 as well as from other high-end flagship devices is its 1080p HD 5.7-inch display. The rather large size takes advantage of the clear resolution much like its predecessor the Galaxy Note 2, which did pretty well in making the 720p display work its charm for viewing the device in different angles. On the other hand, the LG Nexus 5, which sports a 4.95-inch display also does well in taking advantage of the 1080p resolution, but given its size, it's safe to say that it its very comparable with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, HTC One, and the Sony Xperia Z than having to compare it with Samsung's oversized phablet display in the Galaxy Note 3.

The S Pen functionality of the Note series is of course one that is hard to beat by other smartphones, and the same goes with the LG Nexus 5. But then again this is pretty understandable since the Galaxy Note 3 is mainly intended for a different market as opposed to the Nexus 5 which is made and designed for the general user. The main advantage of the Note 3 in this area is it has built-in writing and drawing app that pretty much suits the demands of its intended market. On the other hand, although the LG Nexus 5 will not come with a bundled stylus, users can simply download drawing and writing apps from the Playstore, if they intend to use their smartphone notebook-style.

When it comes to removable battery and expandable storage, the Samsung Galaxy note 3 takes on the lead. Almost every Samsung phone technically comes with a removable back. Perhaps Samsung understands the demands of some users, who are opting to carry around a spare battery rather than the unit charger. As for expandable battery, aside from the internal memory of the Note 3, users can pop in extra storage using a microSD card slot. Google's Nexus devices on the other hand, do not come with expansion slots. Thus, they rely mostly on on-board storage and the cloud. So most likely, there will be Nexus 5 variants with expansion slots and there will be those without one. In addition, we found out that the FCC filing for the Nexus 5 makes it a smartphone with non-removable back - a feature its predecessors lack.

LG Nexus 5 over Samsung Galaxy Nexus 5

If there is one thing that makes the LG Nexus 5 stand out over the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and other smartphone devices it is the fact that it will be the first to sport Android 4.4 Kitkat, the last and final installment in the Jellybean series. The beauty of this update though is it has completely overhauled the Jellybean into a different Operating System so much so that you cannot call it a software update for many reasons than one. This is actually the key feature that the Nexus smartphone series is using to entice its clients. It's not surprising then that the first smartphone to get an update for the 4.4 KitKat is Nexus 5's predecessor, the Nexus 4.

Pricing is also another area where Nexus 4 definitely scores higher to the delight of people, who want high-end smartphones at more affordable rates. For all we know, the Note series always comes or falls on the pricy smartphones. The Note 3 costs $899 for the unlocked model, but is valued at $299 when bought with a two-year lock-in contract from any of the major carriers. Meanwhile, the LG Nexus 5 - however high-end it is when it comes to certain aspects - just comes around at $349 for 16GB and $399 for a 32GB for unlocked models.

Although we should have given the credit to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for having a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chip with 3GB of RAM, we opted to give credit to the LG Nexus 5, which comes with the same processor with 2GB of RAM. The reason for this is having a powerful chip inside a relatively affordable device isn't something we see everyday. Additionally, both smartphones sport the Adreno 330 graphics chip for stellar graphics processing.
