Based on a controversial true story during the AIDS stricken years of Ron Woodroof, the well anticipated biopic film, Dallas Buyers Club, starring McConaughey, Leto and Garner is now playing in select theaters.
Supreme casting is just one of the noteworthy attributes for this film. Aside from great acting and stellar performances that have already generated award buzz, McConaughey and Leto both lost a dramatic and unhealthy amount of weight for their roles as AIDS patients.
McConaughey plays the lead as Woodroof, a Texas rodeo cowboy who was diagnosed with AIDS in the mid eighties. Given only days to live after failed treatment during the early years of the AIDS epidemic, the overly stubborn and self-involved Texan refused to accept his death sentence.
Woodruff began his own research on AIDS and its impact on the human body which ultimately lead him to experimenting with non-approved drug combinations that delayed the decaying effects of the AIDS virus.
Since the drugs were not approved and available in the U.S., Woodroof sought treatment in Mexico and soon began smuggling the drugs into America. Because he was finding success with the "unapproved" treatment, Woodroof began offering the goods to other AIDS patients that he had been introduced to.
To evade the criminal aspect of his actions, Woodroof founded a filtering organization now referred to as the Dallas Buyers Club where he attempts to fend off the FDA officials and pharmaceutical empires. Woodroof's explanation and defense, "I'm selling memberships not drugs."
In a supporting role, rock star favorite - Jared Leto, depicts an overly-convincing transsexual and AIDS patient known as Rayon. With a like-minded personality, Rayon becomes a black-market business partner with Woodroof and together they created an enterprise that changed the face and pace of their respective diseased.
Jennifer Garner, who plays Dr. Eve Saks - Woodroof's American physician, is receiving great accolades for her performance as well.
Don't head to the theater without tissues for this one. The trailer guarantees it to be a tear jerker.
