(CHICAGO, IL) British Airways has declared a 22 year old Mayo Clinic Patient unfit to fly based on his weight. After spending over a year in treatment for a hormone problem and weighing in at 500 pounds, Kevin Chenais is having a hard time finding a way home, on-the-fly.
As reported by Yahoo News and a local CBS affiliate, Chenais and his mother are tearfully stranded and blaming the airline for grounding them. "Now they just leave us, and they brought us here," says Christina Chenais.
After spending a week at a hotel near the airport while attempting to find a way home, Kevin Chenais and family will be traveling by train and boarding a ship in New York where they will sail the sea afloat the Queen Mary, a cruise ship.
In an interview with a local CBS station, Chenais was feeling ashamed when he stated that "I'm sure a lot of big people like me or bigger cannot travel because they have the same problem."
In need of continuous oxygen and close proximity to physicians at all times, Kevin Chenais even shared his premonition that something was going to go wrong before he could go home.
British Airways is insisting that they exercised due diligence in trying to find a solution for the stranded, not-so-fly passenger. Reports state that an email from Caroline Titmuss reads, "We will always try to accommodate someone if it's possible and safe to do so." "Unfortunately, it is not possible to safely accommodate the customer on any of our aircraft and the family has been offered a full refund."
Funding the hotel accommodations for Chenais, British Airways claims they were attempting to explore alternative methods of transportation for him. A conflicting report by AFP implies that British Airways was difficult during mediation efforts based on information received from the French consulate.
The family has been provided with attorney referrals that can possibly provide assistance.
Absent a life-jacket that guarantees it can support 500 pounds, it seems that Chenais will be "sinking" his teeth into sailing for a sea worthy return home.
