An Inglewood standoff last Wednesday resulted in an intense shootout but with the suspect in custody. Two police officers were injured but thankfully, no casualties were reported. After hours of negotiations, the suspect finally surrendered and was taken to be booked. Two hostages were identified and later freed without major injuries.
The Inglewood standoff began when a neighbor reported seeing the suspect dragging a teenage girl by her hair into a single-family house. It didn't take long for the police to respond. A little past noon, the authorities had the area surrounded. They quickly learned that the suspect had 2 female hostages with him. Police officers swarmed the area and waited for negotiations to begin.
In a dramatic twist to the Inglewood standoff, the gunman opened fire on the police, hitting one officer in the chest. Thanks to his bulletproof vest, the policeman was able to survive the shooting but was taken to the hospital. Neighbors reported the intensity of the shootout to be akin to being in a warzone. Multiple shots were fired on either side, thankfully without any casualties. Another officer was injured after she fell from a wall while trying to aid the policeman who was shot in the chest. Residents were quickly evacuated, as tensions rose and their safety became an issue.
After nine hours, the Inglewood standoff ended with the suspect surrendering to the police and releasing the hostages. The 45-year-old gunman was found to have a criminal history. Both hostages, the suspect's girlfriend and their 14-year old daughter, were unharmed except for a cut on the teenage girl.
The entire scene occurred in a usually quiet block of well-kept homes where neighbors were preparing for an uneventful Thanksgiving dinner. In a matter of moments, the ordinary day turned into a frightening ordeal for the residents of Inglewood.
