Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh called Pope Francis' on his apostolic exhortation as 'pure Marxism'. On his show titled, "It's Sad How Wrong Pope Francis Is (Unless it's a Deliberate Mistranslation By Leftists)", the radio host emphasized on how the Pope Francis' stand on social justice is wrong.
He says "It's sad because this pope makes it very clear he doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to capitalism and socialism and so forth." The pope's papal proclamation, the "Evangelii Gaudium" has been commented on by different sectors for its significant stand on economic equity and social equality.
The apostolic exhortation made mentions of the tyranny of capitalism and asked for world leaders to channel efforts in fighting poverty and finding balance and social equality. A part of his proclamation Pope Francis made mention of the imbalance in the global economic system and attacks the "idolatry of money"
With these statements Limbaugh commented the ironies saying he has been to the Vatican numerous times and it would not exist without money.
Catholic groups were quick to defend the Pope and denounced the talk show hosts comments about the papal proclamation. On November 27, The Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good (CACG) issued a statement in response to Limbaugh's attack on the pope.
"To call the Holy Father a proponent of "pure Marxism" is both mean spirited and naïve." The group then filed a petition December 2 denouncing Rush Limbaugh, as according to the group's representative that the comments made against the pope are disturbing towards "all Catholics of all political stripes".
