The White House recently reported that the President gave his support to the Senate bill increasing the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour. Whether the bill will make it through Congress is still in question. Many states are taking upon themselves to increase minimum wage sparking the new question of "what state has the highest minimum wage in America?"
The answer to what state had the highest minimum wage seems to be Washinton. It currently stands at number one on the minimum wage front, but that isn't stopping Seattle-Tacoma from passing a law making the little suburb the highest paying in the US. Washington's minimum wage rests at $9.19 an hour, the highest among all 50 states. SeaTac is hoping to get a $15 wage floor in their city approved. Both industry owners and Union leaders in the community championed the initiative. If passed, it will affect roughly 6,000 airport and hotel staff in the city. Washington isn't only the answer to what state has the highest minimum wage, it is also among America's wealthiest with a median household income of $57, 573 as of 2012.
Other states on the top of the list of what state has the highest minimum wage are Massachusetts and California both with $8.00 an hour; Nevada, Illinois and Connecticut with $8.24 an hour; Vermont with $8.60 an hour; and Oregon with $8.95 an hour.
Though SeaTac is a fairly small area when considering the rest of the United States, people are optimistic that this would spark a change throughout America. Union leaders hope that this can serve as a model for raising wages and mobilizing workers all over the US, making the question of what state has the highest minimum wage offer up different answers in the coming years. Opposition, though, are quick to rebuke the law saying that unions are manipulating the community and raising hopes that may not come into fruition.
