South Africa, and indeed the whole world, has lost one of its most luminescent and kindest souls-South African anti-apartheid figure Nelson Mandela has passed away due to an extended lung infection. He died on Thursday at his Johannesburg home at age 95.
Though the former president has been weak and frail for almost a year now, South African President Zuma's announcement of his passing shook the nation with grief. Zuma also announced that the Nobel Peace Prize laureate would also receive a full state funeral and has ordered all flags to be flown at half mast as a show of reverence.
Reuters reports that the United Nations Security Council was in session when news of Nelson Mandela's death was made public. The meeting was immediately stopped and a minute of silence was given for the solemn occasion.
Nelson Mandela first appeared out of obscurity to act and speak out against the white minority apartheid government. His advocacy of armed resistance against apartheid in the 1960's was considered groundbreaking but what made him truly magnificent was his capacity to also champion reconciliation and forgiveness. He was elected president in the nation's momentous all-race election in 1994 and was retired by 1999.
"Our people have lost a father. Although we knew this day was going to come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss. His tireless struggle for freedom earned him the respect of the world. His humility, passion and humanity, earned him their love," Zuma spoke in his address regarding Mandela's death.
Many other world leaders have given their condolences and speeches about Nelson Mandela's death shortly after the information was made known. US President Barack Obama spoke about what an inspiration the humanitarian giant was while British Prime Minister David Cameron called him "a hero of our time."
Truly, the world's most famous political prisoner will not only be missed but lamented all over the globe.
