To finally have an Apple iOS 7 Jailbreak is perhaps the greatest holiday gift for loyal iPad and iPhone users. For one thing, it has already been months since the official release of the iOS7 yet we still do not hear news or any progress update on it being jailbroken.
However, things are starting to brighten for those who have been patiently waiting for the jailbreak version of the iOS 7, Apple's latest mobile OS technology update. To increase the speed of progress on the technical work needed to complete the jailbreak process, several prominent people including science fiction author and digital freedom activist Cory Doctorow have decided to launch a crowdfunded reward program for whoever can hack the latest Apple iOS 7 and come up with a jailbroken version. The program is named "Device Freedom Prize," which is actively operating under the tutelage of Elizabeth Stark, an entrepreneur-in-residence at StartX, a Stanford University accelerator.
Contrary to circulating news that an iOS7 jailbreak is still unavailable, VentureBeat reported that iJailBreak Pro has already released a paid version which is priced somewhere between $30-50. However, the crowdfunded reward program aims to come up with an open source version, which can easily and freely be accessed by everyone and anyone who wants to enjoy the perks of a jailbroken iOS7.
"We strongly believe that users should have the freedom to control their devices," the group behind "Device Freedom Prize" said in a statement. "We want an open source jailbreak for iOS 7, giving users the capability to install what they want on their own devices and the ability to audit the code they're using to do so."
As of late the funded reward is at $1,790, enough for the successful hacker/s to purchase a MacBook Air and an iPad. Techthirsty reported that the said pot money is expected to grow as donations continue to fall in.
According to GBM, EvasiOn is the most qualified team to work on the Apple iOS 7 Jailbreak, but Evad3rs already teased that they are already working on a jailbroken version that they are projected to release come January 2014.
Nevertheless, enthusiasts are also rooting for EvasiOn since the team has promised to come up with an iOS 7 jailbreak that has advanced specs for the physically handicapped and visually challenged such as gesture control for people with motor issues.
