Gay Teacher Fired For Not Following the Teachings of the Church, A School Provision

A gay teacher reportedly got fired for not following the teachings of the church, a provision that his now ex-school strictly upholds.

According to Yahoo! News, Michael Griffin, an openly gay teacher lost his job when he revealed that he was already applying for a marriage contract to finally wed his long-time partner.

Griffin worked at a Pennsylvania Catholic school called Holy Ghost Preparatory School for over 12 years now, and his working relations with the administration of the school was never stained until last Friday.

The French and Spanish teacher spoke to the media that everyone including the administrators and the principal has always known that he is gay, but no one brought it up or even asked his sexuality prior to the incident.

The gay teacher got fired Friday after he emailed the administrators that he was running late to work because he was going to file for a marriage license for him and his partner.

However, the school administrators confronted him that his email, which he sent to the school email server has made his sexuality known to the public and to the students; thus, they claimed that they are firing him from his position if he decides to go through with the wedding.

"He said... 'if you go through with that I have no other choice but to fire you,'" Griffin said on what Holy Ghost Preparatory School president Father James McCloskey's ultimatum was. "I was in shock, I had no forewarning."

Griffin continued to reveal that he and his partner already had a civil union five years ago and he even wears his wedding ring to school.

Meanwhile, McCloskey and the administrators of the school explained to ABC News that the gay teacher was simply fired for violating the terms of the school when it comes to same-sex marriage.

"Unfortunately, this decision contradicts the terms of his teaching contract at our school, which requires all faculty and staff to follow the teachings of the Church as a condition of their employment," McCloskey said. "In discussion with Mr. Griffin, he acknowledged that he was aware of this provision, yet he said that he intended to go ahead with the ceremony. Regretfully, we informed Mr. Griffin that we have no choice but to terminate his contract effective immediately."

Griffin was actually a graduate of the Holy Ghost Preparatory School himself and he was even raised Catholic. He even said that he loved and embraced the teachings of the school.

Nonetheless, he is now saddened by the decision of the administrators, but he has not decided yet on discussing his termination with his lawyer.

"We talk about brotherhood with all of these people. ... I feel like my parents disowned me but my brothers still stand by me," he added.
