An honor student was fatally shot multiple times during a traffic stop near his own school, police said Monday.
According to Yahoo! News, a 23-year-old honor student was killed in a fatal shooting during an encounter with a campus police officer for a traffic stop about the student's driving behavior.
The student was identified Robert Cameron Redus of the University of the Incarnate Word, and he was allegedly pulled over by Cpl. Christopher Carter at around 2:30 a.m. Friday near the campus because he was allegedly driving "erratically at a high rate of speed." Additionally, police said "a struggle ensued between the suspect driver and the police officer," which later on led to the fatal shooting in the parking lot of the Tree House Apartments, located next to the campus.
Multiple sources reported that Redus was shot multiple times during the struggle and was pronounced dead at the scene after the fatal shooting.
"There was boom, boom, boom, boom, boom -- six shots," a witness told ABC News affiliate KSAT-TV.
As of late, authorities cannot confirm what really happened that led to the struggle and why the police fatally shot the honor student. However, the University revealed that Carter is on paid administrative leave while the investigation is still on-going, a standard procedure for police agencies in Texas.
In the statement, the University released, it even said that Carter "has an extensive law-enforcement background" and has been with the school for "several years" now.
Carter is not available for any comment as of late, reported ABC News, adding that police didn't provide more details on the incident.
Meanwhile, Redus' family is grieving their loss. "We are understandably devastated by the death of our dear son Cameron and we ask for your prayers as we deal with our tragic loss."
The Alamo Heights Police Department is the one in charge of the investigation with the assistance of the Texas Rangers.
