Fans of BBC's Sherlock are looking forward to the New Year perhaps much more than normal as the trailer for the show's third season has been released and we see that Sherlock is indeed alive and well. However, it looks like the consulting detective from Baker Street has been away for a while and has not been updated on the comings and goings of his crew-specifically one Dr. Watson.
The trailer implies that Sherlock's feat of faking his own death will soon be revealed but more importantly, he will be forced to figure out what has been happening in his absence. Will Watson and Holmes team up again? How did Watson survive? How does Molly figure into the whole mystery? Why did we have to wait so long for Sherlock to come back?
Lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch shares what he thinks Sherlock Holmes will have to grapple with this season: "I think he's regressed, which is a shame in a way as it would have been lovely to have evolved him into somebody who was perversely different for a little bit."
"I think without Watson the stabilizers have come off the bike a little bit, or they've been put back on, I don't quite know," Cumberbatch said, commenting on how Sherlock Holmes has fared without Watson. "He's not in tune with London, he's not in tune with his natural habitat and he's nowhere near in tune with what it is to be a human being in society."
Other tidbits from Cumberbatch include a promise of a cliffhanger ending, a new villain quite unlike fan favorite Moriarty and the fact that TV execs have expressly forbidden him to change Sherlock's hair.
The new season of Sherlock will be aired on New Year's Day with the episode, The Empty Hearse on BBC1 at 9 PM.
