New York City taxi drivers are putting out a pinup calendar for 2014 thanks to Phil Kirkman, a writer and filmmaker who thought about the idea and created the calendar, togehter with his photographer friend, Shannon McLaughlin, according to a report by MSN News.
It's not your usual calendar pinups of firefighters with shiny biceps and ripped abs. The calendar was a playful display of how two creative people appreciate one of the most under-appreciated classes of individuals in the Big Apple.
As opposed to the fire department's annual Calendar of Heroes that features model-like - the only things missing are capes and superpowers - firefighters, the NYC Taxi Drivers calendar is the extreme opposite - pot bellies everywhere and body hair in places you couldn't imagine existed. The landscape: one cabby, Yassar, lies on a back seat shirtless. Waseem, another cabby, blows a kiss to the camera.
Kirkman told the cabby models that the ingredient for the success of this project is fun and humor, not pectorals of steel.
"It just seemed right to put them in front of the camera and let them show the other side of the driver you don't get to see," he told MSN News.
According to the report, New York City's Taxi & Limousine Commission was not involved in Kirkman and McLaughlin's project. However, Commissioner David Yassky commended the two and approved of the results.
"I applaud the photographers who put it together for seeing that New York City taxi drivers are the unsung heroes of the city," Yassky told MSN News. "They work very hard at a very demanding job, and I think giving them an opportunity to show off a little bit is a good thing."
Proceeds from the sale of the calendars will go straight to University Settlement, a local NYC group that provides assistance through different social services for poor immigrant families in the New York area. The price of the calendar is $14.99 and can purchased at www.nyctaxicalendar.com.
