Mega Millions jackpot for Tuesday may be the biggest jackpot ever in the history of US lottery.
People flocked to buy Mega Millions ticket as its prize money skyrocketed to $586 million. According to a game official, the probability of having a winner just before Christmas is likely.
The $586 million prize was announced on Monday and another increase is believed to be underway on Tuesday, maybe before 11pm. This is according Virgina lottery director, Paula Otto. Ms Otto is the head of the Mega Millions game franchise.
If the winner of the draw chooses the lump sum cash, the prize will be $316 million. Another option that the winner has is to have multiple payments over the course of 30 years. Otto also stated that almost 70% of the ticket are bought the day of the draw. This weekend, ticket buyers swelled into lotto outlets to avail the chance at the 586 million jackpot prize.
Oddly enough, this ticket buying frenzy caused the jackpot prize's increase and its predicted spike on Tuesday.
"If it doesn't surpass the record, we'll be close. It's growing a little faster than we thought," Otto claimed.
If there are more and more tickets sold, then the chances of matching the 259 million possible combinations will also increase. The draw for the Mega Millions Lotto is on Tuesday and ticket sales so far are enough to cover at least 75% of the possible number combinations.
If no one wins the exact combination of the numbers, the jackpot will continue to increase until the next draw, which will be on Friday.
"We've never had a jackpot this high the week before Christmas," said Otto, who is positive a winner will be named before Christmas.
"You like to see winners and you like to see big jackpots. I leave it in the hands of the bouncing balls," she said.
