Colorado teen mistaken for burglar, killed by own stepfather; no charges filed

A Colorado teen was mistaken for a burglar when she sneaked back into her own home; thus the teen's own stepfather didn't hesitate to shoot and kill her.

According to USA Today, a 14-year-old teen was shot before 6 a.m. upon her entrance to her home. Colorado Springs police said that the incident happened in the 4000 block of Ascendant Drive, on the city's northeast side.

The teen was rushed to a local hospital by officers, but she was declared dead later on.

Police spokesman Larry Herbert said that the police are not planning to release the identities of the teen and her stepfather as of late.

Statements from the police revealed that the initial 911 call was for burglary in progress. However, Herbert didn't say anything on the number of times the girl was shot or the type of weapon used.

Responding officers found the girl in the basement with a chest wound, KOAA-TV reported. Additionally, police scanner suggests that the Colorado teen had climbed through a cellar window.

Investigations are still on-going, and no charges have been pressed.
