Patrick Swayze's widow, Lisa Niemi, has announced her engagement to 58-year-old jeweler Albert DePrisco on Saturday. DePrisco reportedly proposed to Niemi on Christmas Eve after the two dated for a year and a half.
Lisa Niemi first made her relationship with DePrisco public in October last year in Miami. Niemi and DePrisco met through the couple's mutual friend at a birthday party.
Wedding rumors surfaced in November, claiming that Deprisco and Patrick Swayze's widow were gearing up for marriage. This came out shortly after reports of Niemi buying a condominium unit in Boca Raton, Fla., to be closer to her boyfriend surfaced earlier this year.
Patrick Swayze and Lisa Niemi were married in 1975. Niemi lost Swayze to pancreatic cancer in 2009 but the widow waited three years before removing her wedding band and entering a new relationship with a new man.
"About a year ago or eight months ago, all of a sudden I had this bizarre thought and it didn't really make sense to me, but I had a moment when I went, 'you know what this ring says? I'm married to his physical form,'" Patrick Swayze's widow shared to "New York Live" the previous year when asked about her late husband. "And actually my connection to him, since he has been gone, has been much deeper than that. And I felt like in a way, for me personally, wearing the ring was lying about the depth of our relationship."
In 2010, Lisa Niemi said to People that she was open to the idea of a new love and possibly remarriage.
She shared that she would like companionship love and she hoped she would not become one of those women who never want to enter into a new relationship ever again after losing their first.
At that time, she was not yet in a relationship with DePrisco and was only still getting over her husband's death. She said that "who knows, that's another bridge I'll cross when I come to it. I may get there and go, I don't know. But I like to think that I can."
During an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Lisa Niemi shared that husband Patrick Swayze's death gave her the chance to appreciate her time on earth even more than before.
She shared that because of her loss, she grew to live more in the moment and expressed her thoughts on her late husband, saying ""I've been really blessed to have a man who always believed in me and who thought I was smart and beautiful and good. And I hope I can continue to prove him right, that he was right about me."
