Melissa Harris-Perry: MSNBC Presenter Offers Apology For Insulting Mitt Romney's Black Grandchild On National TV

Melissa Harris-Perry, host of MSNBC, offered a sincere apology to Mitt Romney's family on Tuesday after one of the panels of "Melissa Harris-Perry" show dissed Romney's black grandchild in one of the show's segments.

On the Sunday episode of her show, Melissa Harris-Perry opened up a discussion about "Photos of the Year" with a panel. The photo collection included one taken of the Romney clan celebrating Christmas together wherein President Obama's former election opponent is shown cradling Kieran, his adopted black grandchild, in his arms.

During the discussion in this segment, one of Melissa Harris-Perry's guest panelists, Pia Glenn, sang "one of these things is not like the others! One of these things just isn't the same." The panelist added, "and that little baby, front and center, would be the one."

Melissa Harris-Perry added her own opinion regarding Mitt Romney's grandchild, saying she imagined Kieran Romney and Kanye West's daughter with Kim Kardashian, North West, getting hitched in the future.

The comments regarding Romney's grandchild sparked an uproar among the viewers of the show, majority labeling Melissa Harris-Perry and her guest panelist's comments as racist.

Harris-Perry posted a formal apology to Romney's family on Twitter on Tuesday morning, mentioning that she herself belonged to a mixed-race family and that the MSNBC host felt "familiarity" with Romney's family picture.

Melissa Harris-Perry tweeted, "I am sorry. Without reservation or qualification. I apologize to the Romney family. #MHPapology."

She added that she worked by a guiding principle that people who offend do not have the privilege to tell those they have hurt that they're wrong for hurting.

The talk show host expressed her thoughts on the matter and said that though she did not mean to offend anyone, she would like to apologize to Romney's family for hurting them unintentionally.

Melissa Harris-Perry also shared that she herself is a black child born into an extended Mormon family so she felt "familiarity" with Romney's Christmas family photo.
