A 3-year-old Hawaii girl died after suffering massive brain injuries during a dental procedure last month, according to MSN News.
According to court documents, Ashley Boyle took her 3-year-old daughter Finley to Island Dentistry last December 3, 2013, for an extensive dental work that would have included four root canals and multiple cavity fillings.
Earlier this week, the family of Finley Boyle filed a case against Lilly Greyer, Kailua, Hawaii, the dentist in charged with the dental procedures, and Island Dentistry for Children in Honolulu for negligence and dangerous conduct. The Boyle lawsuit alleges that Finley was given incorrect dosages of sedatives which resulted in brain damages. The Boyle family also said that the hospital staff was not properly trained for emergencies.
L. Richard Fried Jr., the Boyle family's attorney, said last Saturday, January 4, that Finley was given "grossly excessive amounts of sedatives that resulted in cardiac arrest. After the heart attack, Finley would later suffer from brain damage.
The Boyle family charges that the staff was improperly trained especially for emergencies. The family said that the staff failed to check the Finley's vital signs for 26 minutes.
"It ended up being a massive overdose," said Fried.
Finley died with her family by her side, said Kenneth L. Zeri, president and chief professional officer of Hospice Hawaii, according to a report by ABC15. Zeri and the hospice released a statement regarding Finley's case.
"There are few greater privileges in life than to accompany someone on their end-of-life journey, providing comfort and support not only to that person but also to their loved ones," the statement said. "As with all of our patients, we were truly blessed to be able to be there for The Boyle Family and for Finley at the end of her journey."
The statement went further saying that Island Dentistry for Children has closed permanently, but it did not provide any further details or explanation.
Neither Dr. Geyer nor Island Dentistry immediately responded to requests for comment.
Finley's death follows a case in California that gained nationwide attention last month when Jahi McMath, 13, was declared brain dead after a tonsil surgery that has gone wrong at an Oakland children's hospital.
