As Syria's civil war approaches its third anniversary in March, there was a major breakthrough that recently took place on the night of Tuesday January 7th. The first set of chemical weapons which are banned through an international treaty were shipped out of the country on Tuesday night which will be eventually shipped to a United States navy ship to be permanently destroyed aboard the ship.
The concern for the use of chemicals weapons heightened after there was a confirmed gas and chemical attack on August 21st in a suburb of Damascus. The concern for the chemical weapons issue was also heighted as the number of Al- Qaeda linked extremist have rapidly risen coming in from surrounding countries to help support the overthrow of Bashar Al-Assad.
The rebels who have started out as moderates who wanted to overthrow Assad for his dictatorial rule of Syria, have been infiltrated by Al Qaeda linked extremists whom have threatened to kick out the moderates and to take control of the revolutionary efforts. With this being the concern, the United States and many Western countries have backed off of their support of the revolution as there have been kidnappings of journalist and Westerners inside of Syria who the rebels feel are contradictory to their cause in overthrowing Bashar Al-Assad and setting up an Islamic state inside of Syria.
Dutch diplomat, Sigrid Kaag, who is in charge of overseeing the destruction of the chemical weapons, said in a statement regarding the process, "the vessel has now left the port of Latakia for international waters". "It will remain at sea awaiting the arrival of additional priority chemical materials at the port."
The process will continue until raw materials that are crucial in the process for creating chemical weapons, will be transferred onto American naval ships and then eventually destroyed out at sea.
