Chris Christie: "I Wasn't Told The Truth" About Bridge Closing In Ft. Lee

Newly-elected Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie said he was blind-sided yesterday when his communications director called him, breaking the news that a major bridge closing in Ft. Lee, New Jersey had been a complicit mistake, causing unnecessary traffic-jams and frustration to the citizens of Ft. Lee for 4 days.

He spoke in regards to the incident, today, about the closing of a bridge which serves major traffic sources.  Before Christie spoke it had been ambiguous as to whether he'd Ok'd the bridge closing.   But Representative Bill Pascerell stated he believed it shouldn't be a question of whether the Governor knew or didn't know-he appointed all of the people involved in the closing of the bridge-it was on the Governor's watch, who hadn't even been sworn into office yet.  Therefore, he owes the people of Ft. Lee an apology, said Rep. Bill Pascerell.

Chris Christie took the stage at approximately 11:30am, EST to address the people of New Jersey and Ft. Lee to take responsibility for the bridge closing and apologize for the conduct of all those in his administration which may have resulted in the bridge closing.  The bridge closing is said to have become a national security issue.  Christie told the people that he addressed the issue with his chief of staff and staff in general.  He is currently looking for people to come forward and tell him who was involved in this bridge closing.  He went into detail explaining how he was lied to by his staff, claiming their lack of involvement in the face of evidence claiming otherwise.  Newly re-elected Governor Chris Christie, as a result, has terminated the employment of a key member of his staff.  To rectify future incidents, he said he will now begin having one-on-one meetings in the form of interviews, with members of his staff.

Chris Christie emphasized in his address to the people that he's had a long track record of working closely with his trusted constituency and prior to this incidence had no reason not to trust anyone.  In regards to being lied to, he feels betrayed.  He can't promise a perfect administration but he's giving the people of New Jersey what he thinks they expect for the situation-an apology, cooperation with an investigation and corrective action to assure it doesn't happen again.  The investigation will bring with it further details in the days to come.
