Jay Gruden Joins NFL's Washington Redskins as Head Coach

Jay Gruden has been named head coach of the Washington Redskins. Gruden, the younger brother of former NFL coach and ESPN analyst Jon Gruden, signed a five-year deal.  Gruden replaces Mike Shanahan, who was fired last week after a losing season which saw the team lose eight consecutive games.

The Associated Press reported that Gruden is the eighth coach in 16 seasons for the Washington Redskins.

According to CBS Sports, several other teams were interested in Gruden's services. Gruden was also being pursued by the Minnesota Vikings, the Tennessee Titans and the Detroit Lions. Gruden was former offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals.  As offensive coach, Gruden lead the Bengals to three consecutive playoff appearances.

Gruden is a former University of Louisville, Kentucky quarterback. He played four seasons at the college level. Gruden also played for the Barcelona Dragons and the Sacramento Storm in the World League of American football. He later played for the Tampa Bay Storm, where he won four Arena Bowl titles.

He started his coaching career as offensive coordinator, with the Nashville Kats and later became head coach of the Orlando Predators, where he won the Arena Bowl in 1999 and 2000.

He later worked as an offensive assistant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he won a Super Bowl ring. He also worked as offensive coordinator for the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League.  In 2011, he joined the Bengals as offensive coordinator.

ESPN reported that Gruden had several connections to the Redskins organization. He served five seasons under current general manager Bruce Allen, when he was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also worked with secondary coach Raheem Morris in Tampa and tight ends coach Sean McVay for a year in Tampa and a year in the United Football League.
