The Bikini Bridge, hailed the next Thigh Gap of 2014, was supposed to be a fitness inspiration for people looking to get in better shape but the latest trend to go viral in social media sites is reportedly a scam originating from the dark corners of the internet.
Hashtag #bikinibridge, which has been increasing in popularity in social media sites such as Tumblr and Twitter, defines Bikini Bridge as "bikini bottoms are suspended between the two hip bones, causing a space between the bikini and the lower abdomen."
It has gained popularty as the "thinspiration" trend of 2014, but there seems to be more to the real source of Bikini Bridge than fitness fanatics.
Investigation showed that Bikini Bridge originally debuted in 4chan, the photo-sharing board that has churned out a number of hoaxes in the past.
Since all users of 4chan are anonymous, the original user who started the trend remain unknown.
The anonymous user started the "Operation Bikini Bridge" effort which was composed of two simple phases.
The first phase involved members of the operation were to upload and share photos of the so-called Bikini Bridge, along with a seemingly inspirational but actually indicting quote.
"Create propaganda parading the 'bikini bridge' to be the next big thing (pic related - that read "If you have time to complain, you have time to train," or "Getting a smoother tan line from your bikini bridge"). Circulate it throughout the internet. Simultaneously, we create reverse propaganda, denouncing the bikini bridge as an unhealthy obsession. This, too, we circulate throughout the internet," said the anonymous user.
After the fitness trend gains popularity within social media sites, 4chan then plans to divert the focus to shame overweight people.
"After a fair amount of circulation has been accomplished," the Bikini Bridge originator said, "we circulate the images throughout parts of the internet known to be biased on the subject of weight (i.e. thin privilege, fat shaming, etc.).
The anonymous user added that in the past 4chan users have initiated many other hoaxes and questionable campaigns, including an effort to have a "creepy" 40-year-old man win a contest to meet singer Taylor Swift before intentionally spreading false news related to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
Many media outlets have already picked up on the Bikini Bridge hoax but many Instagram users continue to uphold the trend, upload images of their own Bikini Bridges and brag about them.
