New Mexico School Shooting Leaves Three Injured, Gunman Detained

New Mexico school shooting - authorities in southern New Mexico reported a shooting at a middle school in Roswell Tuesday morning that injured at least two children and one employee. The suspect has been taken into police custody.

According to Eastern New Mexico Regional Medical Center representative Brooke Linthicum, the two students' injuries were not life-threatening and are being treated following the shooting at Berrendo Middle School. She did not disclose specific details on the two students' injuries.

Roswell officials reported that the suspected gunman was arrested Tuesday before the middle school was placed on emergency lockdown.

According to the police, the students were transported by bus to a nearby mall where their parents can pick them up. The Roswell Police Department posted news of the incident on their Facebook page.

"We believe there are injuries but to what extent we don't know yet," Dmyan Brown, spokesman for New Mexico State Police, said in an official statement.

Roswell has been the center of several incidents of gang violence for the past few years and has requested help from Homeland Security Investigations.

Roswell City Councilor Savino Sanchez shared that he found out about the Berrendo Middle School shooting through a phone call, adding that panic and worry spread among the residents after news of the incident broke out.

"I know a lot of people are concerned," added the councilor.
