Oscars 2014: 'American Hustle,' 'Gravity' Lead The Pack With 10 Nods Each, Tom Hanks Snubbed For Best Actor

Oscar season has officially opened as the nominees for the 86th Annual Academy Awards were revealed today, placing "American Hustle," "Gravity," and "12 Years A Slave" at the forefront of the most prestigious movie awards of 2014.

"American Hustle" and "Gravity" tallied the most nominations, with 10 each, while "12 Years a Slave" was a close second with nine nods.

The three juggernauts are joined by "Dallas Buyers Club," "Captain Phillips," "Philomena," "Her," "Nebraska," and "The Wolf of Wall Street, rounding up the total to nine contenders for this year's Best Picture.

An unexpected snub came in the form of Tom Hanks who had been a favorite for the Best Actor category for his role in "Captain Phillips" or Best Supporting Actor for "Saving Mr. Banks." Early frontrunner Robert Redford also failed to get a nod for his one-man show "All Is Lost."

Hank's co-star Emma Thompson was also unexpectedly snubbed for a Best Actress nod. Oprah Winfrey, who was considered an early top contender, also missed the boat for "The Butler."

In addition to Best Picture, "American Hustle" earned nominations for Best Actor (Christian Bale), Best Actress (Amy Adams), Best Director (David O. Russell), Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Lawrence), Best Supporting Actor (Bradley Cooper), Costume Design, Original Screenplay, Production Design and Film Editing.

The outer-space survival epic "Gravity" scored nods for Best Director (Alfonso Cuaron), Best Actress (Sandra Bullock), Best Cinematography, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, as well as nominations acknowledging its technical achievements: Film Editing, Production Design, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Visual Effects.

"12 Years a Slave" is another Oscar heavyweight with nine nominations including Best Director (Steve McQueen), Best Actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o), Best Supporting Actor (Michael Fassbender) and Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as for Editing, Costume Design and Production Design.

Following Golden Globe recognitions for both Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, "Dallas Buyers Club" is up for another six nominations for the Oscars 2014 with Best Picture, Best Actor (McConaughey), Best Supporting Actor (Leto), Film Editing, Original Screenplay and Makeup & Hairstyling.

"Nebraska" proved to be another heavy contender with six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Bruce Dern), Director (Alexander Payne), Supporting Actress (June Squibb), Cinematography and Original Screenplay, as did unique love story "Her," with nods for Best Picture, Production Design, Original Screenplay and Original Song.

Despite numerous issues regarding its explicit content, "The Wolf of Wall Street" is still an Oscars favorite with five nominations, including Best Picture, Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), Director (Martin Scorsese), Supporting Actor (Jonah Hill) and Adapted Screenplay.
