Giligan’s Island Russell Johnson dies at 89

Russell Johnson died due to kidney failure at the age of 89, on Thursday morning.

The Professor on CBS television sitcom "Giligan's Island", died at his home in Washington.

Johnson's wife, Constance confirmed in ABC news the sad news about the actor's death.

He died at home, peaceful, in his sleep at 5:21 am today. A very brave guy who knew what he wanted and he wanted to be at home."

The 89-year-old actor, known for his character as Professor, gained fame in the sitcom as one of the seven castaways isolated in an island on 1960s.

His character in the sitcom was known to be good in supplying scientific contraptions and generators for the passenger of the ship but never provided them with solutions on how to get off on the island.

Johnson often played the role of a villain in different films before the "Giligan's Island". Russell appeared in different films including MacArthur, "It Came From Outerspace" and "Greatest Story Ever Told".

 Johnson became inactive after Giligans but manage to appear in other shows such as "My Two Dads" "Dynasty" and Newhart".

He married Kay Cousins whom he had a son, David and a daughter Kim. Kay died in 1980 and his son in 1994 of AIDS.

He published his memoirs in 1993 called "Here on Giligan".

Before marrying Kay, Johnson joined the Army Air Corps druing World War II and served as a bombardier over the Pacific warzone. In 1945, his plane crashed breaking his ankles. He was then discharge from the Army. 

He married again and lived with Constance and his daughter with Kay at Washington in 1988.

Johnson is the last surviving male cast of the sitcom. Others surviving member are Dawn Wells who played the role of the farmgirl Mary Ann and Tina Louise who played as sexy movie star Ginger.
