When Erin Andrews of FOX took to the field to interview Richard Sherman of the Seattle Seahawks, after the 23-17 win against the San Francisco 49ers to claim the title of NFC Champions and seal their place in Super Bowl XLVIII, she couldn't have known that the interview with Sherman would become the firestorm that has been created by his rant.
While viewers watched as Sherman verbally assaulted 49ers receiver, Michael Crabtree, the FOX microphone became a weapon and Andrews was caught in the middle of the firestorm. The sparring between Sherman and Crabtree began when Sherman played a key role in the interception that sealed the deal, sending the Seahawks to the big show on Feb. 2. When Sherman mocked Crabtree, the trash talk began and it was off to the races.
Andrews' reaction to the Sherman outburst is almost as surprising as the rant itself. She told USA Today's For The Win that she wasn't afraid of Sherman. According to Andrews, Sherman gave her a "giant bear hug" in his euphoria, just seconds before the epic rant. While social media is buzzing with negative commentary on Sherman's behavior, Andrews seems more than okay with how the interview played out. She told For The Win, " That was so awesome. I loved it." Andrews told FTW further, "We hope they lose their minds like that, we hope they show pure joy.We hope he does the same thing at the Super Bowl."
So, what will the Super Bowl bring? Likely more tough talk from Sherman. Andrews reportedly may travel to Seattle for a one-on-one interview with Sherman before the big game. FOX will air the Super Bowl on Feb. 2 with coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m./ET.
