"Daft Punk without masks" has become the most popular search item on the internet and with good reason. French electronic pop duo Daft Punk just took home two of the biggest awards for the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, record of the year and album of the year.
Daft Punk without masks has always been a novel phenomenon that fans rarely get to enjoy because the duo is known for sporting helmets everywhere and never responding verbally in any occasion.
While this mysteriousness is one of the group's selling points, Daft Punk without masks will remain buried treasure unless someone uncovers why they do it and what the two musicians actually look underneath all that futuristic costumes.
Daft Punk going without masks is unheard of and in their recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the French duo explained why they disguise themselves constantly.
Thomas Bangalter told the reported that "We (Daft Punk) are interested in the line between fiction and reality, creating these fictional personas that exist in real life" — and a way to enfold Daft Punk's music within a tradition of flamboyant pop theatricality that includes "Kraftwerk and Ziggy Stardust and KISS; people thought the helmets were marketing or something, but for us it was sci-fi glam."
The other half of the Grammy-winning duet, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, said "We're not performers, we're not models — it would not be enjoyable for humanity to see our features … but the robots are exciting to people."
Fun fact: the matte white helmets with gold visors that Daft Punk wore at the Grammys was the first time in their entire career they've changed the original helmet designs.
This doesn't stop people from wondering though if one of the main reasons they really like those suits is the convenience of sending people with the same body types to events such as awards shows and parties. You might not recognize Daft Punk without masks in the crowd but you might not even recognize it's really them underneath their futuristic gear if they send a body double to the next Grammys.
