The magazine’s 50th anniversary swimsuit edition cover has very little to do with bathing suits, and yet appears to be a milestone too big for just one supermodel.
So the magazine tapped a trio of topless beauties — Nina Agdal, Lily Aldridge and Chrissy Teigen — to grace the cover of the perpetual best-selling issue that hits the stands next week.
Sports Illustrated dubbed the cover “some of the hottest real estate a supermodel can inhabit, ” comparing the space to a $50 million Tribeca triplex.
The troika of stunners were told they had snagged the coveted cover Thursday afternoon. If there was any disappointment at not getting a solo feature on the front, the ladies hid it well, reacting with glee when they were shown the cover by MJ Day, the editor of the swimsuit issue.
“We really honestly liked each other,” Teigen said, according to Sports Illustrated. “Of course you are going to hear that from anybody who does a group shot, but this time it’s true. The connection was natural and the mood was fun.”
In a video posted on S.I.’s web site, Teigen was on the verge of tears as she saw the cover. Aldridge hugged Day. And Agdal, video-conferenced in from Palm Springs, was elated.
“This is so embarrassing,” Teigen said.
The trio is pictured in knee-deep crystal blue waters of the Cook Islands, their arms around each other, and their smiling faces turned to the shore. Aldridge and Allen are clad in orange thong bikini bottoms and Teigen models a barely-there pink bikini.
Teigen has been a regular in the swimsuit issue since her debut in the 2010 edition when she was named “rookie of the year.” Two years later, Agdal made her S.I. debut and likewise garnered “rookie of the year” honors. Aldridge – who is also a Victoria’s Secret Angel – makes a splash with her first swimsuit edition appearance a spot on the cover.
She becomes the first “rookie” to grace the cover of the swimsuit edition since German supermodel Heidi Klum did so in 1998.
