"Rousey vs. McMann" may be poised to be the biggest battle in women's UFC in a long while as Sara McMann and Ronda Rousey are set to go head to head in an epic showdown in 10 days.
Two Olympians, Rousey vs. McMann, will battle it out for the UFC women's bantamweight championship and only one can emerge the winner.
The question is, who will be hailed the strongest of them all? Will it be defending champ Rousey or dark horse challenger McMann?
The long epic showdown doesn't seem to be much of a problem for defending champion Sara McMann who was photographed getting a massage on Wednesday during her quick break from training.
All week, reporters and camera crews have been in her gym just outside Los Angeles, peppering her with questions about her future as the face of mixed martial arts, about her budding movie career and, most notably, about McMann.
Media outlets and fans are already calling this fight the biggest one of the decade for this particular category since two strong Olympic medalists will be facing each other. Organizers and media men alike, everyone is working overtime to mold McMann as the defending champion's most dangerous opponent yet.
McMann earned herself a silver medal in wrestling in 2004 while Rousey won a bronze for judo back in 2008.
Rousey's aiming to protect her hard-earned title after UFC named her its first female champion in 2013.
“If anything it’s starting to feel normal,” she says. “Even before, when I wasn’t getting as much media attention for my fights, I was doing just as much work. I was just doing it on my own. I was spending hours a day on social media. I was trying to do every single interview I could—if it was somebody’s blog or some random Joe’s podcast. I was spending just as much time doing it, I just wasn’t reaching as many people.”
But McMann's certainly not going down without a fight.
“I plan on winning every position,” said McMann in an interview. “If you go in and you’re positionally strong and you go to not just counteract somebody else, but to set your own pace and set your own game plan, that’s how you beat people.”
Her best strategy may well be to wear Rousey down in a long, physically taxing fight. Afterward, she'll take the title and go back to her normal life in South Carolina.
Who do you think will win this week's match between these two strong contenders?
