Wanda Sykes and wife have always been getting a lot of attention ever since the Monster-in-aw actress publicly 'came out' in 2008, just about a month after they tied the knot.
According to Express, the 49-year-old actress revealed that it took a while for her parents to accept her sexuality. Hence, Wanda Sykes and wife Alex walked down the aisle without their blessing.
"I was 40 when I came out to my parents... When I came out to my parents, I was having a surgery and my mother and my sister-in-law, they were going to come out here (to Los Angeles) to be with me during the surgery," Sykes said. "And I said, 'Mum, let me just explain something to you. You know I'm living with so-and-so, I just want you to know that we're not just roommates... She's my girlfriend...' She was like, 'What do you mean?' I was like, 'Mum, come on, you have to have known this... I just want to make sure we're clear on this.' She just fell apart, fell apart and ended up not coming out here for my surgery because she was just that, 'I'm done with you (attitude).'"
Wanda added that after the obvious denouncement she and her wife received from her parents, she experienced a period of estrangement. Good thing her parents have come to accept Wanda Sykes and her wife later on, and now they are even taking pride in their roles as grandparents to the happy couple's kids.
Additionally, Wanda Sykes and wife Alex's story made headlines back in 2013 when she talked about her life as a black gay woman on "Oprah's Next Chapter."
In the interview, aside from Wanda Sykes opening up about why she "chose to be straight" initially such that she decided to date men and even married a man once (Dave Hall from 1991 to 1998), the actress also talked about the time she showed off her wife to President Obama.
"Alex was standing next to me and I said, 'this is my wife,' " she said adding that she made a face to Obama, who then kindly greeted her wife Alex. "It was just so natural."
"And then when the first lady came over and I introduced her, the first lady was like, 'You put up with this?' You know, just totally making jokes like you would to some other couple, like a straight couple," she added. "Just for a minute, I thought, 'Oh my God. The first lady is sitting here talking to my wife. I said 'my wife' to the first lady and to the president of the United States. This is crazy!"
