Trainer Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain is thrilled with Juan Manuel Marquez's upcoming showdown with Mike Alvarado, but the Hall of Fame trainer is not interested in the proposed Pacquiao-Marquez 5 bout.
In an interview with BoxingScene, Beristain said that Marquez made the right decision to face Alvarado, saying that fight fans will be given a treat on May 17th at the Forum in Los Angeles.
"He [Alvarado] is a difficult opponent for a fighter like Juan," Beristain said. "[Alvarado] is a tremendous puncher. It's ideal for Juan to provide a big fight to the public, but this one is dangerous, because Alvarado is young and strong."
Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum recently announced that the winner of the Marquez-Alvarado showdown will face the winner of the upcoming rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley on April 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Beristain knows that Marquez is desperate to win a fifth title in as many divisions, but the veteran trainer said that the 40-year-old Mexican should just fight a champion from a different sanctioning body instead of facing Pacquiao again if he defeats Bradley.
Beristain pointed out that there is no reason to face Pacquiao again, saying that Marquez's sixth-round knockout win against Pacquiao in their fourth showdown in December 2012 settled the debates on who the better fighter is.
"What Juan Manuel wants more than anything is this [fifth] championship [at welterweight], and that's why the name of Pacquiao is once again [being discussed]. But I believe that if he gets past [Alvarado], Juan Manuel can fight for [a world title from] another sanctioning body. There is no reason for him to face Pacquiao again, who he already conquered with that tremendous knockout," Beristain said.
Marquez previously turned down numerous offers to face Pacquiao again, but Arum revealed that the Mexican boxing icon had a change of heart because of his desire to capture the WBO welterweight title.
"Marquez wants to win that title and that's an incentive for taking this fight with Alvarado, because he knows he will get that opportunity if he wins. So if it's Pacquiao, he said he would fight him again, and if Bradley wins, well he wants that fight too," Arum said in a previous interview.
