Josh Charles does not have a 'plan' of any sort following his character's (Will Gardner) death on 'The Good Wife.' The actor boldly revealed in his guesting on the 'Late Show,' reported USA Today.
It was perhaps one of the most shocking twists in the history of primetime television: the male lead star of a hit CBS legal drama was gunned to his death, leaving all mouths wide open Sunday night. The following day, we see the same person, Will Gardner, alive and with a more calm resolve as though he never died the night earlier. In case you missed 'The Good Wife' episode 15's most unexpected twist, Will Gardner is already dead, but actor Josh Charles lives on.
In his guesting on David Letterman's show, the actor, who served as the male lead star of the hit series since it began airing five seasons ago, dished some things about his not-so-clean exit from the CBS hit.
Just after a short intro, Letterman right away touched on the biggest issue that is getting much attention online. "You got killed off!" the host said after the actor got settled in.
"That's what you gotta do to get on the Letterman show. I had to do that, I had to get killed off to get on your show," Charles responded quickly.
The actor then acknowledged the fact that it was a challenge for all of them to keep his departure from the series a secret for about a year. Yeah, we've known this since last year. It's been one of the greatest gigs for me in my entire career, but at the end of last year, my contract was up and I was just ready to kind of move on...," he said.
Additionally, Josh added that his decision to come back for 15 more episodes in Season 5 was the best thing he has made. "It really was great for the show and also was a really proper goodbye to the character, so that was special."
When Letterman asked, "What has been the reaction of fans, friends, family to this? It was all secretive, right? You couldn't tell anybody." Charles responded with: "It is kind of amazing. We've been able to keep it a secret for an entire year...Yeah, I told some family members that I know could keep a secret, which is a very few."
Later when Letterman continued by asking the actor about the reactions from his neighbors and the people on the street, the actor heart-warmingly narrated what took place the morning after the shocking episode was aired.
"Uh, no, you know, there's the neighbors - today, I will say this. When I went out to - I went downstairs, and I saw by our mailbox, the neighbors across the street, who I don't even know, had left my wife and I a really beautiful note just saying that we feel like a family member had died and we know this is just a TV show and all that. But it was, I have to say, I was very touched by it. A lot of the, you know, the response on Twitter has been much the same and I just want to say to the fans that, you know, I really appreciate all of your comments," the once-male lead star of 'The Good Wife' said.
Finally, when David Letterman questioned if he now has a "plan of things" he wants to do now that he has exited the show, Josh quickly responded with: "Oh, I have no plan."
Meanwhile, E! Online reported that after the quite intense episode last Sunday night, show creators Robert and Michelle King penned a letter to fans to explain the difficult decision they made in killing the fan favorite character. "We could 'send him off to Seattle,' he could be disbarred, or get married, or go off to Borneo to do good works. But there was something in the passion that Will and Alicia shared that made distance a meager hurdle," they wrote. "The brutal honesty and reality of death speaks to the truth and tragedy of bad timing for these two characters."
