34 year old, Mohammed Khalid Jamil, from Luton, devised a gimmick selling free anti virus software to UK Microsoft computer users.
The plan was to hire call center agents from India to wrongly inform users that their computers are having some serious problems, convincing them to purchase an anti virus to solve the issue. The victims not knowing that the anti virus was free, were obligated to pay a fee around $50 to $250 for the software.
Microsoft created the anti-virus software, and released it at their website to be downloaded for free. The scam victims who were unaware of the software, allowed the scammers to enter their computers remotely. The fraudsters who were accessing the computers from another location, intentionally made it more vulnerable to security threats, prompting the victims to pay a fee for an install of the software as a solution.
The sammer, Mohammed Khalid Jamil, was eventually caught and sentenced for four months in jail. He was also compelled to settle for the prosecution costs amounting $23,200, and compensation pay at $ 9,440. The courts' decision on the case was a turning point for Trading Standards.
The chairman of the National Trading Standards board, Lord Harris, believes that the legal action directed to the case was a triumph. The conviction of a person involved in an internet scam is a step forward in terms of securing and protecting web consumers. It has been reported that this types of scams and gimmicks has been plaguing the internet for several years, and bringing those involved to justice will provide a positive solution for the problem.
Jamil who orchestrated the Microsoft scam, pleaded guilty to his crime, admitting that he was involved with the unfair trading. He was responsible for allowing the call center agents to spread false information to users. It was also reported that Jamil established Smart Support Guys, the company in Luton, which employs people from India. The agents were directed to claim that they were a staff from Microsoft.
The main target of the Microsoft scam are UK consumers.
