Trainer Robert Garcia believes that both Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana will have a tough night in their upcoming showdown on May 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Garcia told BoxingScene that defeating Mayweather will be a gargantuan task for Maidana, but he also pointed out that it won't be easy for the reigning pound-for-pound king as well.
The 2012 Trainer of the Year pointed out that Mayweather, who will put his unbeaten record on the line, has not fought a fighter like Maidana before.
"Mayweather's never fought somebody that's going to stay on him like Maidana will," Garcia said. "He's fought guys, maybe Cotto fought similar trying to put pressure, and he had a few good rounds, too. But Maidana and Cotto are totally different. Maidana goes out swinging trying to hurt his opponent."
Garcia also revealed that he is planning to train Maidana like the way they did during their previous fight against Adrien Broner in December last year.
Most experts are already convinced that Broner should not be touted as the heir apparent to Mayweather after losing to Maidana, but Garcia pointed out that he can see similarities in the fighting styles of both fighters - the reason why Maidana's training should be similar to their preparation for the Broner fight.
"Broner does fight a little similar to Mayweather," Garcia said. Mayweather's much more experienced. Much more intelligent in the ring. He knows how to adapt. He knows how to control a fight. But the training has got to be a lot similar. Just we try to be a little faster."
Garcia added, though, that he will not let Maidana watch Mayweather's previous fight against Robert Guerrero and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, saying that that his fighter doesn't need to watch it because Mayweather clearly dominated both fighters.
"Why would I want him to watch do what he did to Canelo or to Robert Guerrero? Why would I want him to watch that? He clearly won. Dominated easy. I don't want him to watch. He doesn't need to watch that," Garcia stressed.
