Mozilla Chief Executive Officer, Brendan Eich, who was recently appointed last month offered his resignation for criticizing same sex marriage rights. Mozilla is very popular for its internet browser Firefox. The executive chairwoman of the company Mitchell Baker, also posted the current news on a blog.
"Mozilla prides itself on being held to a different standard and, this past week, we didn't live up to it," she wrote.
Mozilla CEO, Brendan Eich, who is also the co-founder of the company, is said to be a major opposition against equal rights for the third gender and gay couples. The chief stepped down from his post after protest from angry netizens was expressed online. He also removed himself as a board member of the Mozilla Foundation.
Brendan Eich is also known to have developed and maker of a scripting language, JavaScript. He was appointed as Mozilla's CEO on March this year, after that netizens declared their grief and anger towards social media networks. The resigned chef was also reported in donating for the anti-gay marriage law, in support for its approval in 2008. The law was not able to go through and was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court just last year.
The strongest protest against Eich appointment as Mozilla's chief was from the website OkCupid. Visitors of the website with the use of Firefox was directed to a page expressing anger to the new chief, and suggesting that users use another browser to access the site. Mozilla supported the chief's appointment during the initial stages of the controversy, but after he resigned, the company apologized for the statements.
Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich decision to resign his post in order to retain consumer loyaty to their company is a wise move. His support for anti-gay marriage, and being against equal rights for the third gender generally seems to be a disadvantage for the company.
