2012's Blockbuster surprise hit 21 Jump street, a film adaptation loosely based on the police-crime-drama television show which ran from (1987-1991) staring earring-wearing, then teenage matinee idol Johnny Depp and partner Peter DeLuise, had Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as the leads.
The first film introduced the fail police officer team Greg Jenko (Tatum) and Morton Schmidt (Hill) two best friends and former schoolmates, who are then moved to the 21 Jump Street division where they are assigned to go undercover as high school students in order to investigate the distribution of a new synthetic drug contained in their old high school.
The duo thinking they can easily resume their roles in the high school hierarchy from where they left off, Schmidt as the popular jock and the other as the Eminem-obsessed nerd, are thrown through a loop when the rules for making it in high school seem a little bit different from what they were used to way back when. And to add to the confusion, there's a mix up of epic proportions where Schmidt, and Jenko accidentally interchange their assigned undercover identities; Jenko's now in AP Physics, while Schmidt is being scouted to play for the school team. And as in the way of a legit high school experience they get carried away by the undercover life, the two best friends butt heads, and grow apart. Individually they confront old insecurities to overcome their weaknesses, discovering different sides of themselves, and later coming together in the end just in time to bring down the bad guy.
The movie ended with a possibility for a sequel, and here set for release this Summer on June 13, 2014 is 22 Jump Street!!! Which has the rag team police officers Schmidt and Jenko going to College.
Judging from the trailer they are looking into yet another drug distribution case, where they will undoubtedly get into the same kind of shenanigans but in a larger, wilder scale.
As for why they are now in 22 Jump street, the reason being that the Koreans bought back their church.
