Floyd Mayweather Jr. is set to become at least $32 million richer on Saturday night after his highly anticipated showdown with Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Multiple reports confirmed that Mayweather will earn a minimum guaranteed purse of $32 million, which was the same guaranteed purse he got when he faced Miguel Cotto in May 2012 and Robert Guerrero in May 2013.
The amount is lower than what he got in his last bout, though, since he pocketed a career-high purse of $41.5 million during his showdown with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in September last year.
The blockbuster showdown, wherein in Mayweather ran away with a majority decision win to become the Ring and WBC welterweight champion, generated a record-setting revenue of $150 million.
Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, said that the huge amount of money Mayweather commands is a solid testament that the reigning pound-for-pound king is indeed the best fighter in the world today.
"This is a great thing to be able to generate these record purses and these record amounts of revenue, it's a wonderful, wonderful thing," Ellerbe said via RingTV. "Here is a little guy from Grand Rapids, Michigan, who is in the bright lights of Las Vegas and he's become a global superstar. If Saturday was his last fight, I'm personally going to be the happiest man in the world."
Forbes described Mayweather as the biggest PPV star on the planet today, revealing that the last eight fights of the unbeaten champion averaged 1.5 million PPV buys.
Experts believe that Mayweather's upcoming fight against Maidana will not hit the 1.5-million mark, which is the reason why the 37-year-old champion is doing his best to promote the fight.
Mayweather recently said that the Maidana fight could be his last, but analysts believe that it is just a way of promoting the fight - as if saying that fans should watch the bout because it could be the last time they will see Mayweather on top of the ring.
"I'm being honest- I be contemplating every day, talking about getting out of the sport now. I'm very comfortable. Very comfortable," said Mayweather, who is an 11-1 favorite heading into Saturday night's showdown.
His opponent, Maidana, will receive a guaranteed purse of $1.5 million, along with pay-per-view shares from Argentinian TV networks and other revenue.
