Apple Vs. Samsung Update: A California Jury Awarded Apple Victory Over Smartphone Patent Battle Against Rival Samsung

Apple vs. Samsung patent battle recently got a decision from a California jury, awarding the iPhone maker $119 million, which is a lot less than the companies demand over the rival Korean smartphone manufacturer. The jury decided the case giving Apple the upper hand over Samsung for allegedly copying smart phone features on their products, although Apple was also charged with illegally using one of Samsung's patent.

In 2012, a similar patent battle was also won by Apple against the same Korean company, Samsung, which awarded them $930 million, for patent infringement charges against older Samsung smart phones which are no longer available for sale in the U.S.. The recent verdict for the separate trial this year was again won by Apple, but the company was only granted $119 million, far from the initial demand of $2.2 billion.

Samsung also got a small victory over Apple, when the jury awarded the Korean company $158,400 from the initial $6 million demand, after deciding that Apple infringed one of Samsung's patents in the production of their iPhone 4 and 5.

A Santa Clara University law professor, Brian Love, made some statements that the awarded amount to Apple may probably not exceed the expense incurred by the company from litigating the case, which is less than 10 percent from the amount the company initially requested.

A continuation for the deliberations are scheduled on Monday, and jurors are set to return in court to attend to minor details that may possibly provide a more higher amount awarded to Apple. The spokesman from Samsung, Lauren Restuccia, has declined to give any comment about the matter, referring to the current deliberations.

The silicon valley company, Apple, already considered the verdict as a win, declaring their victory over Samsung. A spokeswoman from Apple, Kristin Huguet, provided an official statement saying, "Samsung willfully stole our ideas and copied our products." she also added that,"We are fighting to defend the hard work that goes into beloved products like the iPhone, which our employees devote their lives to designing and delivering for our customers."

Apple and Samsung are known for having a close competitive struggle to achieve dominance worldwide for the $330 billion smartphone market. The Korean company Samsung still leads the race by getting 31% share of the smartphone market in the world, while Apple who was previously on the top only got 15%.
