New York Yankees News and Rumors: CC Sabathia Placed On DL, Michael Pineda Out For At Least Four Weeks

Injuries continue to pile up for the New York Yankees as reports indicated that the Yanks have placed CC Sabathia on the disabled list, while Michael Pineda is not expected to return anytime soon.

The Yankees announced on Sunday night that Sabathia will be on 15-day disabled list due to an inflammation of the right knee, which was the same knee that underwent surgery due to a torn meniscus in 2010.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that Sabathia complained about his knee after their 5-4 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, and underwent MRI on Sunday morning.

The MRI revealed no structural damage in Sabathia's right knee, but the left hander will have his knee drained on Monday, which will be followed by another MRI as a precautionary measure.

Sabathia, who is 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA this season, admitted that he hesitated to inform team doctors about his ailing knee because of the recent injuries that hit their starting rotation.

Ivan Nova and Michael Pineda are still out for the Yankees, forcing the club to name Vidal Nuno and David Phelps as replacement to their injured starting pitchers.

"It's tough," Sabathia said via ESPN. "That's why I didn't want to say anything, but I think I was doing more damage to the team than helping the team by trying to hide it."

Pineda is also expected to be out longer than expected as reports indicated that he could be sidelined for another four weeks due to a Grade 1 back strain.

Pineda, who was a subject of controversy last month after he was caught using pine tar, was initially ruled out for three to four weeks in late April, but Girardi announced that the 25-year-old right hander needs more time to recover.

It is still unknown at this point who will be inserted into the Yankees starting rotation, and Girardi admitted that the club will be tested further in the coming weeks.

"Obviously it tests your depth and it stretches you," Girardi said. "The two guys that we brought in so far have done a pretty decent job. But we're going to be tested further now."

The Yankees are 19-17 this season - good for second place in the American League East behind the 20-15 Baltimore Orioles - but have lost in six of their last 10 games.
