Even with a star-studded collaboration, the new FIFA song fails to hit the charts, build FIFA hype, or impress Brazilian football fans, for that matter.
Football fans in Brazil are expressing their disappointment over the 2014 World Cup theme song titled "We are One" by JLO, Pitbull, and Brazilian diva, Claudia Leitte over Twitter under the hashtag #voltaWakaWaka. "Waka Waka" was the title of the chart-topping 2010 FIFA theme song sung by Shakira.
Was it the beat? The rhythm? The rap portion? Critics say Brazilian fans find the song "dull, generic". According to Gaia Passarelli, a former MTV Brazil VJ, the song lacked the Brazilian touch, "it's a shame considering Brazil's rich musical tradition, which is admired all over the world."
Since it's release, "We Are One" has not been well-received by Brazilian and international fans alike. Critics further note that the song has too much English, too much Spanish, and too little of Portuguese verses. Although singer Claudia Leitte delivers the Portuguese verses, many were disappointed that the Portuguese lyrics were situated at the end of the song.
Although "We Are One" fails to hit the right notes for this year's FIFA theme, fans should not be dismayed. International songstress Shakira offers an alternative on the official FIFA album with her song, "Dare (La la la)".
