NBA 2K15 is expected to be a hit on the gaming market next month as new features of the upcoming video game have been making headlines over the past several weeks.
2K Sports, the developer of the popular basketball video game, recently unveiled the new face-scan technology for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The new feature, which was introduced in a video released by 2K Sports, allows users to scan their face and use it in the game in creating a player for exhibition games and the popular My Career game mode. With the face-scan technology, gamers can create a 3D rendition of themselves using PS4 and Xbox One cameras.
According to Jeff Thomas, Visual Concept vice president of sports development, said that they have been thinking about the feature for the past several years, and it finally came into reality because of the capabilities of next-generation consoles.
"It's all done using the processing power of the next-gen systems," Thomas said via ESPN. "We've been talking about doing this for a number of years, but it really wasn't possible until we knew the processing power of the next-gen machines. It took some time to get it right."
The Xbox One and PS4 cameras will capture several angles of the player's face. According to the developer, the creation process takes at least three minutes and should be done in a well-lit room.
"That doesn't sound like a lot of time," Thomas added. "But if you think of things in milliseconds like you do when you make games, with the computer processing power inside that box, three minutes is like an eternity. That just shows how much math and things are required to compute these points in 3D space, then construct a model that looks like you."
According to Thomas, the new face-scan technology is expected to be used and be developed for further games. 2K Sports also creates popular sports video games MLB 2K and NHL 2K along with the WWE 2K series.
"This is just the tip of the iceberg," Thomas said. "I think in the future that every triple-A title is going to want to have some sort of tech like this. It's so much more engaging to actually look at yourself when you're playing a video game compared to some random character."
NBA 2K15 will be released for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on October 7 worldwide. The game is now available for pre-order where gamers will get a Kevin Durant MVP Bonus Pack.
