Saul "Canelo" Alvarez withdrew from his planned fight on December 6 after sustaining an ankle injury that will force him to rest for the next six weeks, but his proposed showdown with Miguel Cotto is still likely to happen.

Edison Reynoso, Alvarez's manager, said in an interview with BoxingScene that they wanted to have a tune-up fight before engaging in a big fight next year, but they had to change their plan.

But despite cancelling their December fight, Reynoso said that the fight against Cotto might be scheduled in May 2015, specifically on Cinco De Mayo weekend on May 2 barring any setback.

"This does not change our plans, which is going for that big fight in May 2015," Reynoso said of their decision to cancel Canelo's December fight. "Obviously everyone knows about Cotto, but we are a big name. We simply want a big fight. This is what the team and Canelo is looking for. We want to find something good for this May, 2015."

Recent reports indicated that there could be hurdles for the proposed fight between Alvarez and Cotto, including the location of the bout because the Puerto Rican might push for a fight either at the Madison Square Garden in New York or Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Weight could also be an issue because Cotto is now campaigning at the middleweight division, while Alvarez wants to stay at the light middleweight limit, but Reynoso expects both camps to settle their differences.

"We leave these things to the rest of the team," Reynoso said. "I don't know if the negotiations will be easy, but there is little concern for is if it is in New York, in Texas or in Las Vegas and [there is little concern about] the weight. We want this big fight for May."

Gaby Peñagaricano, Cotto's adviser, also told BoxingScene that they will not let Alvarez's camp to dictate the negotiation for the long-proposed super fight.

"It is necessary to first see the financial structure, under our rules and our criteria," Alvarez said. "We are not going to fight with Canelo's team over who dictates the fight. Here it is necessary to measure the trajectory of one fighter against the other. Miguel has been an established figure for years and years and Canelo is just beginning to dance."
