Bob Mcdonnell Ordered To Prison - Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has been ordered to prison on Feb. 9 following his request to remain free on bail while his corruption conviction appeal is pending.
On Jan. 6, Bob Mcdonnell and his wife, Maureen, were found guilty of taking bribes. The couple took more than $165,000 in gifts, loans and trips from a rich Vitamin executive in exchange for promoting his products.
Former governor Bob Mcdonnell was sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of 4 of 11 felony corruption charges leveled against him.
On Tuesday, Judge James R. Spencer turned down the request for the former governor to be free while his appeal is pending. Instead, he had Bob Mcdonnell ordered to prison as stated in his sentencing.
Within hours of the judge's ruling, Mcdonnell's lawyer John Brownlee filled a two-page notice of appeal with the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Reports indicate that Bob Mcdonnell's attorneys also made a filling in court on Monday. They argued that the former governor's appeal could last as long as his two year prison sentence.
Bob Mcdonnell's lawyers argue that he would be denied a fair appeal if he has to serve the majority of his prison sentence before the case is adjudicated.
However, state prosecutors say Bob McDonnell predicament is as a result of his attorney's failure to make a strong enough case for his request for bail while the appeal is pending.
Bob Mcdonnell is the first governor in the history of Virginia to go trial and convicted of a corruption.
While Bob McDonnell has been ordered to prison, his wife awaits her sentencing scheduled for Feb 20 - like him she was convicted of corruption charges.
Reports indicate that federal prison officials are yet to decide which facility Bob Mcdonnell would serve his two-year sentence.
