Ohio State Patrol Marijuana - Local Highway Patrol troopers were in for a surprise after they recovered about 235 pounds of marijuana from two Nevada residents, who had been stopped for traffic violations on the Ohio Turnpike.

Reports indicate that it was late afternoon on Interstate 80 in Lorrain County, when a 2007 Chevy 1500 pick-up was signaled over after the vehicle switched lanes without using its turn signal.

After engaging with the driver of the vehicle, 62-year-old Kimberly Benson, and her 42-year-old passenger, Daniel Essad, police say the troopers had probable cause to search the vehicle and contacted the K-9 unit.

During the search, troopers found about 235 pounds of marijuana stashed away at the back of the pick-up truck. According to Lt. Michael Combs, the marijuana was packed in cardboard boxes and duffle bags, some were found wrapped in a Santa gift paper. The stash, which is estimated to be worth about $1.2 million, had been covered at the back of the truck.

Reports indicate that Benson and Essad are both residents of Reno, Nevada. It is unclear where they were coming from and where they may have bought such a large quantity of marijuana.

They have both been charged with felony drug possession and marijuana trafficking, according to the police. They are currently being held at the Lorrain County Jail. Reports indicate that Benson and Essad could both spend up to 16 years in jail and be fined up to $30,000 if they are found guilty.It is unclear if Benson and Essad had prior convictions.

Experts say Nevada lawmakers are seriously considering legalizing pot in 2016. On the other hand, Ohio officials have censured calls for the legalization of marijuana in the state, calling it "a stupid idea" and "outrageous."
