"Minions" can totally rule the world! This weekend, the cute and yellow creatures proved proved that they can invade the weekend box office with a bang — opening with an estimated $115.2 million. And based on the numbers, the "Despicable Me" prequel is now the second-biggest animated movie of all time.
Over the weekend, "Minions" definitely made a jaw-dropping debut at the North American box office. Though it only ranked second compared to the domestic record set by "Shrek the Third" in 2007, which had a $121.6 opening day, the Universal Pictures' spinoff indeed raked up millions and surpassed last week's top performer "Inside Out," which earned $17.1 million, The Sun Daily revealed.
Featuring the voices of Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton and Steve Carell to name a few, "Minions" only cost a modest $74 million to produce. While the studio was able to keep the budget low through a collaboration with animation genius Chris Meledandri, Reuters reported Universal Pictures left nothing to luck when it came to catching the attention of its audience.
"I'm not sure the public is mindful of what films cost, they're more concerned with how they resonate," Universal's domestic distribution chief Nick Carpou said. "Chris is able to produce films that speak to families, to children, to people everywhere."
Furthermore, the studio partnered with several companies such as Snapchat, McDonald's and Amazon to provide a whopping $600 million in publicity and promotions. "Minions" are also seen in almost everything including Twinkies and Chiquita bananas.
"They're everywhere, those yellow guys," Carpou said. "In a way they exist in the culture without even having a film attached to them."
Meanwhile, "Minions" is the fourth film to reach $100 million this year, along with "Furious 7," "Jurassic World" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron."
Aside from the yellow and mischievous tiny creatures, whose main purpose is to serve the most despicable master, horror flick "The Gallows" and sci-fi thriller "Self/Less" are also big openers at the box office weekend, Time noted.
With the "Minions" now leading the box office with $115.2 million, "Jurassic World" is following with $18.1 million. Meanwhile, "Inside Out" landed on the third spot with $17.1 million and "Terminator Genisys" on the fourth place with $13.7 million, while "The Gallows" entered the top five with $10 million.
