"Empire" Season 2 is set to have an explosive return this September as things between Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) and Lucious Lyon's (Terrence Howard) family get more intense with conflicts and brewing wars. Since Lucious is currently in jail, an intriguing conspiracy is underway that will be responsible for a hostile takeover of the company.
The game is on for "Empire" Season 2 as the series takes a more dramatic turn with conflicts between each member of the Lyon family, including Cookie and Jamal (Jussie Smollett). The reason? It's about the fortune and the power they all could earn since Lucious is behind bars, Daily Mail noted.
Aside from the conflicts, which is the focus of "Empire" Season 2 as show creator Lee Daniels revealed, fans can also expect several confrontations between Cookie and Anika Calhoun aka Boo Boo Kitty (Grace Gealey) as well as between Jamal and his ex-beau Michael (Rafael de la Fuente). Sibling tension between Jamal and Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray), who will get a new love interest this season, will also not go away.
"The more stars I put on this show, the more it takes away from the family," Daniels said. "The family, the family, the family is the most important thing."
Apart from the conflicts and confrontations, Lucious is preparing to retaliate against those responsible for his downfall in spite of being in prison, International Business Times reported.
"He [Lucious] is coming back with a vengeance, and with more power and determination than ever," showrunner Ilene Chaiken said. While actor Terrance Howard teased, "Season 2 is going to show Lucious' entire life, the tragedy that happens as a child, and the things that turn him into Lucious."
Furthermore, the mother-and-son relationship between Cookie and Jamal has been strained. Though they have been the ones who were always there for each other, the turn of events in the first season finale shattered their relationship especially when Cookie went against Lucious, who was sent to jail.
"Jamal and Cookie are pretty much not speaking to each other, because Jamal thinks that Cookie betrayed Lucious and the family..." Taraji P. Henson spoke about Jamal and Cookie's relationship. "But hopefully he will come around and know that his mother is not a snitch."
Meanwhile, "Empire" Season 2 will have a great ensemble of guest stars including Mariah Carey, Pitbull, Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges, Alicia Keys and Oprah Winfrey. Chris Rock, Kelly Rowland and Marisa Tomei will have recurring roles as well as Adam Rodriguez, who'll play a potential love interest for Cookie.
In other news, V Bozeman revealed that "Empire" Season 2, which is set to premiere on Sept. 23, is definitely mind-blowing, according to Boom92.
"It's going to be some really juicy situations," Bozeman said. "If you think season 1 was something, season 2 is going to blow your mind!"
