"Hotel Transylvania 2" just opened and the reception of the sequel is a mixed bag.
According to Forbes, "Hotel Transylvania 2" has been described as funny and compared to its lead actor Adam Sandler's live action movies, "Hotel Transylvania 2" is really an upgrade.
The plot revolves around Dracula's daughter Mavis, played by Selena Gomez, getting married and having a kid with Jonathan (Andy Samberg). Hilarity ensues when Dracula spends time with his half-human/half-vampire grandson.
One of the things Forbes praised about "Hotel Transylvania 2" is the genuine chemistry between Dracula and his monster buddies. The supposed genuineness comes from the fact that Dracula's buddies are played by Sandler's real life friends.
IGN, meanwhile, praised its animation. They went on to say that Sony's animation team perfectly executed the wacky car chases, funny stunts and emotional reactions of the characters. Even if it's a computer-generated film, the film still managed to let you see the subtle touches of the Gendy Tartakovsky.
Tartakovsky, the director of the first and second "Hotel Transylvania" is also known as the creator of famous cartoons such as "Dexter's Laboratory," "Samurai Jack" and "Powerpuff GIrls." The review went on to say that "Hotel Transylvania 2" is a feat for the eyes.
However, the article found the writing of the movie as weak, which was attributed to the fact that only Robert Smigel, one of the original writers from the first film, returned.
According to the A.V Club, the film has been praised as pretty hilarious. "Hotel Transylvania 2" is charming enough, even in its weakest moments. Director Tartakovsky was again praised, stating "Tartakovsky can sell this kind of non-gag to kids, no doubt; he has a true animator's gift for making mere acts of movement compelling."
However, the film's pacing was criticized and was called "too impatient" noting that some rather important scenes were rushed.
Overall, "Hotel Transylvania 2" is a fun movie for kids and adults alike. It may not be the greatest animated film to date but it's definitely Adam Sandler's most recent best movie.
