“Nancy Drew” TV series will grace the small screen soon, and CBS’ TV adaptation of the iconic mystery book series will be co-written by “Grey’s Anatomy” producers. Isn’t that exciting?
CBS will feature the super sleuth Nancy Drew on another TV series based from the book series by publisher Edward Stratemeyer. Carolyn Keene was the publisher’s pseudonym. The network has also reeled in Joan Rater and Tony Phelan, former “Grey’s Anatomy” executive producers to co-write and produce “Nancy Drew.”
Comicbook.com revealed the “Nancy Drew” TV series will be about the lead character, Nancy Drew, who’s now an NYPD detective. She makes use of her “uncanny observational skills as she search for clues and solves crime, all the while making her way throughout the complexities of living in the modern world."
The amateur detective has been showcased five times on the big screen and three times on the small screen. In the late 1930s, former child actress Bonita Granville played the part of Nancy Drew in four Warner Bros. movies helmed by William Clemens.
In 2007, Emma Roberts took on the role of Nancy Drew donning her signature plaid skirt and making use of a magnifying glass. Max Thieriot and Tate Donovan portrayed Ned Nickerson and Carson Drew, respectively.
Deadline has learned that the TV series based on “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries” ran on ABC from 1977 up to 1979. Pamela Sue Martin portrayed Nancy Drew initially but by the third season, the focus of the show shifted solely on the Hardy Boys; thus, her character was completely dropped while halfway through the season.
Additionally, ABC aired “Nancy Drew” in 2002, a TV movie with Maggie Lawson headlining the show which was originally meant to be a TV series.
According to Comic Book Resources, the iconic mystery book series created by Edward Stratemeyer, sold around 80 million copies and has been adapted into 45 languages.
