Delhaize America, the parent company of Hannaford Supermarkets and other grocery store chains, will cut 350 corporate positions in Maine, North Carolina and Florida.

Among the job cuts, the company said it will leave 150 positions unfulfilled.  The company did not specify how many cuts were happening in each market.

Spokesman Mike Norton says the layoffs are primarily at corporate offices in Scarborough, Maine, and Salisbury, N.C., with small numbers at Sweetbay headquarters in Florida.

Hannaford has about 1,000 corporate employees and 27,000 store associates in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York.

Delhaize has stumbled recently, squeezed by competitors in both the high-end and low-price sectors. Publix and Wal-Mart have been opening stores in its markets. Last year, Delhaize closed 113 stores, including all of its Food Lion locations in Florida. A month ago, Food Lion closed eight stores, including one in Belmont, and closed 33 Sweetbay stores, all in Florida.

There will be no cuts at the store level, only corporate, the company said.
